Introduction to Open Source Software

OPEN SOURCE:

The term "open source" refers to something that can be modified and shared because it is designed in such a way that it can be publicly accessible.
Such open source products ensures open exchange, collaborative participation, rapid prototyping, transparency and community-oriented development.

Richard Matthew Stallman, often known by his initials, RMS, is an American free software movement activist and the man behind the Open Source Software.

He is the man who launched the GNU Project in 1983 to create UNIX-like OS consisting of free softwares.

WHAT IS OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE (OSS)?

OSS are such type of softwares that are available with its source code, and anyone can inspect, modify and enhance the software.

IS OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE ONLY IMPORTANT TO COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS ?

The answer is NO.

Open Source technology and open source thinking both benefit programmers and non-programmers.

Because early inventors built much of the Internet itself on open source technologies - like the Linux OS and the Apache Web Server application - anyone using the Internet today benefits from the open source software.

Every time computer users view web pages, check email, chat with fellows, stream music or any other thing that requires Internet, their gadgets' consoles connect to a global network of computers using open source software to route and transmit their data to the "local" devices they have in front of them.

Likewise, the cloud computing platforms can be also open source. Openstack is an example of open source cloud computing platform.

WHY PREFER USING OSS?

  • Control
  • Training
  • Security
  • Stability
